JEE Advanced changes paper pattern every year. The number of questions, marks, and question types vary. The following is based on the recent pattern trend. Always verify from the official JEE Advanced website for the current year.
| Paper | Subjects | Sections | Total Marks | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 | Physics + Chemistry + Maths | 3 sections per subject | ~180 | 3 Hours |
| Paper 2 | Physics + Chemistry + Maths | 3 sections per subject | ~180 | 3 Hours |
| Combined | Both papers mandatory | ~360 | 6 Hours total | |
Single Correct MCQ
4 options, only 1 correct. Marking: +3/−1. Most common type — same as JEE Main MCQs.
Multiple Correct MCQ
One or more correct options. Full marks only if ALL correct options chosen. Partial/negative marking applies. Most difficult type.
Numerical Answer
Enter exact numerical value. No negative marking. Wide range of values. Requires precise calculation.
Matching / Paragraph
Paragraph-based questions or matrix-match. Read carefully before answering. Common in Paper 2.
Key Strategy: Multiple Correct questions are the trickiest — a partially wrong answer gets NEGATIVE marks. Attempt only when you're confident about ALL correct options. Numerical questions are safest to attempt — no negative marking.
| Question Type | Correct | Wrong | Partial | Unattempted |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single Correct MCQ | +3 | −1 | N/A | 0 |
| Multiple Correct MCQ | +4 (full) | −2 | +1 or +2 (partial) | 0 |
| Numerical Answer | +3 or +4 | 0 | N/A | 0 |
| Matching List | +3 | −1 | N/A | 0 |
JEE Advanced has a REDUCED syllabus from 2023. Several topics removed. Check the official list. The following are topics ONLY in Advanced (not in JEE Main):

Master JEE Main Level First
JEE Advanced can't be cracked without complete JEE Main mastery. Clear all concepts at Main level before moving to Advanced problems.
Solve Advanced-Level Problem Books
Use DC Pandey for Physics, JD Lee + VK Jaiswal for Chemistry, and Arihant/TMH for Maths. Focus on complex multi-step problems.
Previous Year JEE Advanced Papers
Solve all JEE Advanced papers from 2007–2025. Pattern repeats. Many question types and concept approaches recur regularly.
Full Mock Tests + Weak Area Revision
Take 10+ full-length Advanced mock tests. Analyze mistakes deeply. Revise weak chapters. Maintain formula sheets for quick revision.
Multi-Correct Questions — Be Careful
Skip uncertain multi-correct questions on first pass. Attempt Single Correct and Numerical first. Come back to multi-correct only when confident.
