NEET 2027 — CBT Mode Announced

Major change for 2027 exam

📢

BREAKING: NEET 2027 to be Conducted in Online CBT Mode

NTA and the Education Minister of India announced on 15 May 2026 that NEET 2027 will be conducted in Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode instead of the traditional pen-and-paper OMR format. This is to improve transparency, security and reduce paper leak risks.

The NEET exam pattern 2027 is an important factor for every NEET aspirant to shape their final exam strategy for securing an MBBS seat. Every year, the National Testing Agency (NTA) announces the NEET exam pattern covering exam mode, question format, total marks, marking scheme, OMR/CBT guidelines and time duration.

For NEET 2026 candidates: Note that NEET 2026 was cancelled due to paper leak allegations. NEET 2027 will be the next major NEET exam and will be conducted in the new CBT format. The core structure of Physics, Chemistry and Biology subjects with 720 total marks remains unchanged.

ℹ️

For Current Preparation: Even though NEET 2027 will be in CBT mode, the syllabus, total marks (720), subjects and marking scheme (+4/−1) remain the same. Your preparation strategy does not need to change — only the answer-marking method will be on screen instead of OMR.

NEET 2027 Marking Scheme

+4 for correct · −1 for wrong · 0 for unattempted

+4

Correct Answer

Full 4 marks awarded for every
correctly marked answer

−1

Wrong Answer

1 mark deducted for every incorrectly
marked answer

0

Unattempted

No penalty for skipping a question —
zero marks

Scenario Marks Notes
Correct Answer (all 180) +720 Perfect score — extremely rare
1 Wrong Answer −1 Negative marking reduces score
All Wrong (180 wrong) −180 Blind guessing without strategy is dangerous
All Options Wrong in a Q +4 If NTA declares all options wrong, all who attempted get +4
Question Dropped by NTA +4 All candidates (attempted or not) get full marks
💡

Sarthak Expert Tip: With −1 negative marking, attempt a question only when you are 70%+ confident. If unsure between 2 options, eliminate obviously wrong ones first. Never randomly guess all remaining questions. A wrong answer costs you 5 marks net (−1 wrong + lost +4 correct = 5-mark swing).

📁

NEET 2027 Question Structure

All 180 questions compulsory — no optional section

Unlike the NEET 2021–2026 pattern which had Section A (compulsory) and Section B (attempt any 10 of 15), the NEET 2027 pattern reverts to all 180 questions being compulsory — similar to the pre-2021 pattern. This is part of the restructuring that accompanies the shift to CBT mode.

⚠️

NEET 2026 Pattern (Old) vs NEET 2027 Pattern (New):

Feature NEET 2022–2026 (Old) NEET 2027 (New)
Exam Mode Offline (Pen & Paper OMR) Online CBT (Computer-Based)
Question Structure Section A (35 compulsory) + Section B (15, attempt 10) All 180 questions compulsory
Total Questions 200 Qs (180 attempt) 180 Questions
Total Marks 720 Marks 720 Marks (unchanged)
Marking Scheme +4/−1 (Sec A), +4/0 (Sec B) +4/−1 (all questions)
Optional Questions Yes (Section B — choose 10 of 15) No — all compulsory
Exam Shifts Single shift Multiple shifts possible (CBT)

For Your Preparation: Since NEET 2027 makes all 180 questions compulsory with negative marking on all, accuracy is even more important. Practice attempting all questions confidently. Our NEET coaching at Sarthak Classes trains you with weekly 720-mark mocks in this exact format.

📖

NEET 2027 Syllabus Overview

Class XI + XII NCERT based — Physics · Chemistry · Biology

NEET 2027 Key Changes — What's New

Expected changes announced by NTA for 2027

1

🖥️ Exam Mode Changed to Online CBT

Most significant change — NEET 2027 will be conducted in Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode. Students will use computers at exam centres instead of OMR sheets. The NTA implemented this to improve integrity and reduce paper leak scope.

2

📝 All 180 Questions Compulsory — No Optional Section

Section A + Section B optional structure (used in 2021–2026) is expected to be removed. All 180 questions will be compulsory to attempt, with negative marking (−1) on all questions. This increases the importance of accuracy.

3

🗓️ Multiple Exam Shifts Possible

With CBT mode, NTA may conduct NEET in multiple shifts (like JEE Main) due to the large number of candidates (20+ lakh). Different sets of question papers with separate difficulty levels are expected, similar to JEE Main normalisation.

4

📊 Percentile-Based Score with Normalisation

If multiple shifts are conducted, NTA is expected to introduce percentile-based normalisation (already used in JEE Main, CUET, CAT). This adjusts raw scores fairly across different difficulty levels in different shifts.

5

🔒 Enhanced Security Measures

CBT mode inherently eliminates physical paper leaks. Enhanced biometric verification, CCTV monitoring and digital audit trails are expected at all exam centres. Aadhaar-based identity verification may be implemented.

6

📚 Syllabus and Marking Scheme — Unchanged

The core NEET syllabus (Physics, Chemistry, Biology — Class XI + XII NCERT) and marking scheme (+4 correct, −1 wrong) are expected to remain the same. Total marks = 720. This means your preparation methodology does not need to change.

🎯

Expert Preparation Tips — Sarthak Classes

Subject-wise strategy from our NEET faculty

🌿 Biology (360 marks — 50% paper)

NCERT is the Bible. Read every line, every diagram, every table in Class XI and XII Biology NCERT. Read minimum 7 times throughout the year. Focus: Genetics, Ecology, Human Physiology, Biotechnology. NCERT exemplar for assertion-reason practice.

⚗️ Chemistry (180 marks)

Inorganic Chemistry — follow NCERT strictly, nothing more. Organic — reactions and named reactions with mechanisms. Physical — daily problem practice. All three branches equal importance. NCERT examples and exercises compulsory.

⚙️ Physics (180 marks)

Concept first, formula second. NEET Physics is highly repetitive — solve all PYQs from 2013–2026. Focus: Mechanics (25%), Electromagnetism (25%), Optics (15%), Modern Physics (15%). Formula sheet revision daily.

🗓️ Weekly Mock Test Strategy

Attempt full 720-mark NEET mock every Saturday in exam conditions — 3 hours 20 minutes, no interruptions. Sunday: analyze mistakes, identify weak chapters. Monday onwards: target weak chapters. Sarthak Classes conducts free weekly mocks.

🖥️ CBT Mode Practice (New for 2027)

Since NEET 2027 will be CBT, start practising on NTA's free mock test portal (nta.ac.in). Get comfortable answering on screen, using the review/mark feature, and navigating between sections. Screen fatigue management is important.
